About Captain Awkwardman
aka Thomas Coleman
Thomas' father was a professional magician and between the two of them, they have accumulated nearly eighty years performing magic! Growing up, Thomas opened for his father’s show, answered the magic hotline (All About Magic), and helped reset his dad’s show multiple times on weekends. Thomas began performing magic in the Richmond, VA, area at the age of seven. For the last three decades, that same rope trick he began with has entertained thousands of people throughout Virginia and is now wowing audiences in Florence, SC! By peppering the classics of magic with refined sleight of hand, Coleman packs a punch and knows how to engage the audience. Eleven years as an elementary school teacher has been invaluable when it comes to selecting powerful material for kids. Each trick in the show has undergone extensive research and development from both the technical side and the entertainment value derived from the trick. Some magicians like to see how much time they can "milk" out of one effect. Thomas is not one of those magicians.
Although the structure/tricks in the show are taken very seriously, the number one task at hand is entertaining the kids. Kids love it when the magician messes up. Is Captain Awkwardman a little "clumsy" sometimes? You bet. Is he wrong? If he's wrong, he's in denial. Sometimes he needs a little help from the audience. This type of audience acknowledgement is what separates Thomas from the "Hey look at me!" style of performance.

Along with making things float, Thomas is a multi-instrumentalist who specializes in fingerstyle guitar. Fingerstyle guitar utilizes the thumb for the bass, the index and middle fingers for rhythm, and the ring finger plays the melody. When combined, the guitar becomes a mini orchestra. His dedication to the instrument has earned him a spot as one of the best fingerstyle guitarists in the world.

From Chet Atkins to Tears For Fears, Coleman boasts an extensive repertoire filled with some of the best melodies music has to offer. By adding a brilliant tenor voice and real-time looping, the phrase "one man band" describes him quite well. Imagine a stunning music set by an award-winning guitarist followed by a couple rounds of walk-around magic. Sound interesting? Original? Awesome?
